Organisation

Since its foundation in 1614, the University of Groningen has enjoyed an international reputation as a dynamic and innovative centre of higher education offering high-quality teaching and research. The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen, CLCG, is a research institute based in the Faculty of Arts with research groups (among others) in computational linguistics, syntax and semantics, discourse and communication, and neurolinguistics. It offers a postdoc position in the area of computational semantics and machine learning.

Job description

Applications are invited for a fully-funded 2-year postdoc position (with a possible extension of 6-12 months) focussing on data-driven computational semantics, as part of the Deep Meaning Annotation Project, funded by an endowed-chair position.  The postdoc position will focus on the use and development of machine learning approaches for semantic processing. One of the challenges will be to develop statistical models for semantic disambiguation taking into account annotated data collected by games with a purpose and expert annotators, including tasks such as word sense disambiguation, named entity recognition, noun-noun compound interpretation, and anaphora resolution. The research will be carried out as part of the computational semantics group headed by Prof. Johan Bos, which currently consists of three PhD students.  

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD (or close to completion) in computer science, artificial intelligence, computational linguistics or a closely related area. In addition, they should have a strong background in machine learning and natural language processing, and good programming skills, and enjoy working in a closely collaborating team.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a starting salary of ¤ 3,195 (scale 11.0 CAO-NU) gross per month, with an additional 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end of year bonus on the basis of of a full time appointment. You will be based in Groningen for the duration of the contract. The position is funded for two years at 1.0 fte (with a possible extension of 6-12 months).
